Senior congressman wants Guam missile defence

In a move that further highlighted Guam’s strategic vulnerability, Robert Wittman, the chair of the US House Armed Services Readiness Subcommittee, voiced his approval of the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile system on Guam. His statements came following a meeting with Guam governor Eddie Calvo and Guam senators. The truck-mounted system is designed to destroy short- and mid-range ballistic missiles as they approach their target. The US government first announced its intention of deploying these systems last year, in response to nuclear sabre rattling by North Korea’s political leadership.
