Battle over plans to expropriate Ok Tedi
A war of words has erupted between PM Peter O’Neill and Sir Mekere Morauta, the chairman of PNG Sustainable Development Programme (PNGSDP) Ltd – the major shareholder in the Ok Tedi copper mine. Sir Mekere has accused the prime minister of effectively stealing PNGSDP’s shares in the billion dollar asset, which he says are administered on behalf of the people of Western province. PM O’Neill has said he will legislate to take over the shares without paying compensation.
