NZ eases sanctions on Fiji

New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully has announced that NZ is easing some of the sanctions imposed on Fiji since the 2006 coup. It follows progress being made by Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama’s government since the release of the new constitution last month, and an announcement to hold elections in September 2014. McCully also pledged NZ’s support for Fiji’s election. Part of the measure also sees 10 post-graduate scholarships for Fiji students being reinstated while  sporting sanctions have been revoked. Foreign affairs were quick however, to point out that the ‘regime should not be let off the hook completely’.
