Diplomatic row downplayed

Authorities in Papua New Guinea have downplayed this week’s diplomatic spat between Fiji and Papua New Guinea, saying relations between the two countries remain intact, even though PNG has had to recall its High Commissioner for ‘consultation’. Fiji has resisted PNG’s appointment of High Commissioner Peter Eafeare as dean of the diplomatic corps. No particular reason has been revealed for Fiji’s decision. Fiji’s reaction has caught the PNG government by surprise.
