Fiji ‘not interested’ in rejoining PIF
Fiji Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama says his country will not rejoin the Pacific Islands Forum, unless Australia and New Zealand have their roles in the regional body reviewed. Foreign Minister Ratu Inoke Kabuabola also reiterated this position, despite agreement in Majuro recently to review Fiji’s suspension after 2014 elections. Bainimarama also took a swipe at the United Front for a Democratic Fiji (UFDF)—a group comprising three of the four political parties registered to contest the 2014 elections, for resisting the new Constitution, and says he can understand their fear of facing the judgment of all Fijians, as opposed to the former ethnic based electoral system.
