A local MP on Manus Island is stepping up his earlier threats to stall construction of the detention centre, calling for its outright closure until after the Australian election. One month after the announcement of the PNG Solution, MP Ronny Knight points to serious gaps in consultation over the use of customary land and employment benefits for locals on Manus Island. He warned Manus islanders are preparing to ‘explode’ because they are being overlooked for employment opportunities and other spin-offs.
