Fiji constitution: mixed reactions
Fiji’s new constitution is drawing mixed reactions among its citizens, with the opposition rejecting it outright, saying it is ‘fundamentally flawed’. However, a member the Yash Ghai commission which wrote the initial draft, Dr Satendra Nandan, has offered a glowing overview. He acknowledged, though, that the real test of the constitution will be in 2018, not next year when Fiji is slated to return to democratic elections. However, one political grouping – Peoples Democratic Party, says it will contest the proposed 2014 election, despite having its own reservations.
