When diplomacy rules
Seven West Papuans believed to be fleeing persecution from Indonesian authorities were sent back to Papua New Guinea after landing in Australia’s northern territory last week. Australia seems to have done this in order not to risk any diplomatic row with Indonesia where Prime Minister Tony Abbott is visiting. The West Papuans included a woman, a 10-year old and five men. They are being held at Hideaway hotel near Jackson’s airport, awaiting further instructions from the immigration officials from both Australia and PNG. PNG has sought assistance from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), but the group’s safety in PNG remains a concern, as there have been instances where such people have been repatriated to Indonesia.
Vanuatu continues to champion the cause of their West Papuans at the 68th UN General Assembly. The address has received a warm welcome by supporters and West Papuan leaders alike.
