Australia’s ‘PNG Solution’ challenged

The Papua New Guinea Supreme Court has advised the PNG government to begin preparations to defend the July 2013 ‘PNG Solution’. PNG Opposition leader Belden Namah has instituted fresh proceedings against the government over the camp conditions and treatment of detainees under the refugee resettlement arrangement agreed between Australia and PNG. The resurrected policy on the use of the regional processing centre on Manus will be tested after an Iranian detainee revealed his wish to be a party in the legal proceedings in PNG.
