The Pacific already has a successful model for dealing with global business interests. The PNA is not the only example of a functioning regional entity, but it is a leading example of how small islands can come together to generate significant benefits for their countries.

When there is attention by global media on ocean-related issues in the Pacific, it usually centers on big-time commercial fisheries and the revenue it generates. Rarely, however, is there media focus on local, relatively small-scale efforts to establish and maintain marine protected areas

Due to the heavy focus on climate change action, little has been done by the Marshall Islands in the year since the UN report on nuclear testing report was presented. Officials in Majuro say that is expected to change as they look to engaging UN system in response to various aspects of the nuclear legacy.

Pacific islands should care about their ranking in the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) annual listing because it is an evaluation of border control, enforcement of laws, and systems and services to address prostitution, child abuse, and related trafficking issues.

Pacific nations have little clout in global climate change negotiations, but it would appear that a clear statement will come out of Majuro calling on developed nations for action far beyond what we’ve seen to date to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to avert a worst-case climate scenario.
